It’s amazing how we take ownership of many things, claim it as ours, we have the sole rights and no one can use it without our express permission.
It is nice to be able to take videos of classes and events happening within ISKCON and to document devotional life, great joy is benefited knowing that no matter were in the world we are we can share these events.
More important that individuals can see real devotional life, listen to classes, watch videos, listen to wonderful music how much bliss can be gathered and shared.
I remain reliant on the Internet, each class posted by the Melbourne devotees, each piece of devotional music more precious than the finest of diamonds.
But what is alarming is the issues of ownership, who owns what, who has the right to publish or not.
Take for instance at each temple there is no objection to filming, and do I ask permission to post on the Internet?
NO!
But then some how by my doing this I own the clip, the rights to that piece of information, do you mind if I take a copy do you mind if I use this clip?
Actually the question should be does the person in the clip mind? If taken at the temple does the temple management mind?
My thought is this it is Krishna’s mercy that we can share these wonderful pastimes with not only one another but also the whole world.
We see what difference the audio and film clips of Srila Prabhupada makes to devotees, to see hear and share is the greatest mercy to everyone.
As to cost, yes if a cost is involved then a small request to cover this cost should not be frowned upon.
But as to claiming exclusive rights expecting a mention each time it is used to promote or to glorify devotees, this I struggle with and if possible avoid and should be discouraged from taking hold within the devotee community.
